2D beamforming is the standard technique for generating acoustic images. The most versatile 2D beamforming microphone arrays are the Ring arrays which come in three different sizes with 32, 48 or 72 microphones. They are suitable for indoor and outdoor measurements and the most insensitive to focus variations of all arrays.

The Star array is the perfect choice for long range environmental measurements, especially outdoors. Due to it's size and the large microphone spacings it is also ideal for low frequencies.

As a 2D beamforming microphone array the Fibonacci array offers the best available dynamic of the standard array designs. In addition to 2D beamforming the Fibonacci also offers the ability to do acoustic holography.

Especially designed for wind tunnel applications the Evo array is available with 96 or up to 168 microphones. It offers unmatched definition and acoustic dynamic to identifying aerodynamically created sounds.

This ring array is a 32 channel measurement system primarily designed for applications in acoustic laboratories, but is also used in a wide variety of other applications and environments, such as component testing and troubleshooting.

The lightweight carbon fiber array-body is designed as slim as possible to also be used in difficult to access measurement environments and to ensure easy handling.

The wiring of the microphones is enclosed and protected in the array-body which guarantees the best possible acoustic transparency to measure accurate sound levels.

Array design

The array design is optimized to provide the highest spatial resolution possible while providing a high depth of field to see all sources in one acoustic map independent of distance (within reason). Meanwhile the array design effectively minimizes partial reflections and resonance effects between the measured object and the array. Furthermore, the ring geometry minimizes aliasing effects which are easy to interpret by also indicating a possible source location. The built-in studio microphones have an extremely linear frequency response. All are carefully hand-selected and calibrated to ensure stable sound pressure levels (+/- 0.5 dB).

Set up

To allow long distances, the array is connected to the mcdRec data recorder via two differential SymBus microphone connector cables (max. 20 m). The array comes with an integrated fixed focus camera, which can be supplied as USB or Ethernet version, delivered in different sensor sizes, resolutions and frame rates. The included high-end Manfrotto tripod allows a set up to measure in almost any measurement environment imaginable. Array and tripod are supplied in a transport case and bag respectively.

Fibonacci AC Pro
72 / 96 / 120 channel system for

The Fibonacci array represents a new array family allowing near field and far field measurements with the same hardware. Two Baumer VLG22c cameras (one with an extra wide angle lense for near field measurements) provide optimal reference images. The application area of this array ranges from 30 Hz for holography measurements to 25 kHz for beamforming measurements.

As this microphone array is especially tailored to wind tunnel applications, it meets the highest standards in image dynamics and sharpness of resolution. The Evo AC Pro was designed with a low HF aliasing and high LF contrast, combined with an enhanced spatial resolution.

The foldable sandwich construction allows easy transportation and measurement setup. A convenient setup frame with wheels for flexible positioning of the array and data recorder is included in the delivery. This new system is perfectly suited for troubleshooting sound and vibration problems. The mobile, wireless device enables very flexible measuring positions and angles - allowing the quick and efficient identification of noise sources using acoustic signals.

If you would like to design your very own microphone array configuration, we offer Array Design Kits using our 24 channel microphone bundles. They provide you with flexibility in the array design as well as the possibility to connect 24 microphones to the mcdRec data recorder at once. On top of that, each plug holds the option to memorise array parameters such as the microphone sensitivity and the position of the microphones (similar to TEDS). The set can also be used for Nearfield Acoustic Holography (NAH).

The ADECO software tool allows autocalibration of your custom array geometry: An impulse generator connected to the data recorder mcdRec is used to determine the microphone positions. While the array microphones record the impulses auditory, the mcdRec data recorder logs them temporally. ADECO matches these two recordings and automatically creates sensor files for the custom array. This tool achieves microphone positions with an accuracy of 1.4 mm or less!
